In Douggie’s absence it’s been left to me to report on the game.
Laugharne V Llangwm 25/3/23
It was good to be back in action when we welcomed Llangwm on Saturday for our first game in five weeks. The field was in a surprisingly decent condition considering the recent heavy rain, but with a stiff breeze blowing across the pitch.
‘On a dry, but windswept day, in a week that had seen rain, all roads led to Wooford Park for Llangwm here again’.
That’s enough of the Douggie crap.
We got off to a cracking start when after only a few minutes, Steve ‘Flid’ John scored an unconverted try out wide in our first attack.
With experienced players unavailable and a reshuffled back five in the pack an opportunity arose for some of the younger squad members to show their ability. Tomi Williams and Aled Thomas both impressed with strong performances in attack bursting tackles with bulldozing carries and no holds barred tackles in defence. The windy conditions did cause some handing difficulties, with a few promising attacks thwarted when scoring passes were judged forward. However, Laugharne were creating openings with good inter-passing between forwards and backs and we were soon adding to the scoreboard with a unconverted try from Tom ‘The undertaker’ Davies. Richie Waters captaining the side in Tom Rees’ absence and paying centre was the next to score mid-way out, converted by James Stephenson. James was in action again finishing a slick handling move scoring close to the posts and converting his own try. The final score of the half came from Dorian Harris who had carried the ball strongly throughout. In an attack that saw the ball quickly recycled several times creating gaps in the Llangwm defence Dorian crossed over close to the posts, again converted by James. H/T Laugharne 29 Llangwm 0.
We also started the second half brightly, with half backs Adam (not my son-in-law) and Owz always looking to move the ball wide. In defence, Jack at full back fielded kicks easily and was eager to counterattack and James kicked well in the windy conditions with a number of probing touch finders. Flid opened the scoring with his second try, followed with one from Rhodri who with his bone crunching tackles was again punching well above his weight. Both converted by James. Carl Smith, playing his accustomed dependable game, was next to score, charging through a crowd of Llangwm defenders. During the half, Laugharne introduced replacements, through Tom Lloyd (keep an eye out for him) and stalwarts Gavin John and Gwyn Morris. But Llangwm did not capitulate and with renewed energy scored two tries, both in similar fashion following a series of pick and drive thrusts by their forwards, converting the second. It was Laugharne who would have the final say with a further two unconverted tries by Flid bringing his personal tally to four for the match. Final score Laugharne 58 Llangwm 12.
We thank all involved and our sponsors and supporters. We are away next Saturday (1/4/23) to our local rivals StClears. Please come and support the boys in what will undoubtedly be a keenly contested match.
