Lampeter v Laugharne 8/4/23

It was another tough away game, this week against Lampeter who will undoubtedly be main contenders for promotion.
With a number of players unavailable we were starting with a reshuffled back line. Lampeter showed their intent right from the start and opened the scoring with a penalty followed shortly afterwards with a well taken try out wide. Lampeter with pace in their back line looked to move the ball wide at every opportunity which they achieved with excellent and accurate passing, posing problems for the Laugharne defence. Their backs continued to create space and scored a further four tries, of which three were converted. Laugharne however did strike back through their scrummaging power, being awarded two penalty tries. Laugharne did create other clear scoring chances of their own but unlike their opponents failed to convert allowing Lampeter to build a comfortable lead. Although Lampeter received two yellow cards towards the end of the half they went into halftime clear leaders 34-14.
Laugharne now with the wind advantage started the second half more brightly and eventually finished off a sustained period of pressure with Steve John scoring an unconverted try in the corner. Laugharne continued to press hard but were too often guilty of losing possession in contact. Lampeter went on to score a further four tries through their outstanding back play where they were confident to run the ball from their own line, comfortably exploiting gaps in the Laugharne defence. Final score - Lampeter 63 Laugharne 19.
There is much to be learned and improved ahead of next week’s fixture away to Neyland, who always present a stiff challenge.
