Well an interesting game we had yesterday. Time to try out my new horn me thinks. Apparently we have only ever had one victory at Aberearon. Could we change that on Saturday. That was the question on everybody's lips. Having beaten them at Laugharne, it was now time for us to put them to the sword on their home soil. It was going to be tough, as our Captain, Rhys Thomas was still off with injury. He was still there on the line giving his Support to his team and replacement props, Ben Lloyd who started the game and Tomos Walters who came on in the second half. Both had a great game. (Forgive me if I mention Ben Lloyd a lot but when he asks in his cockney gangster accent to be put in the report, you tend to do it. Scary!!!).
The rain had held off for the game and the pitch wasn't looking to bad. The wind however was cutting and was blowing from end to end. So me and my daughter headed for the stand and sat amongst the Aberaeron fans (probably not the best place to try out my new horn!!!). Anyway, we kicked off with the wind in our favour and we could see that it wasn't going to be easy as they held there own scrums and were a fairly hefty unit. It was end to end rugby and unfortunately our end saw the first points go over, with Aberaeron getting a penalty kick after threatening our line. With my horn still not yet sounded, it was time to turn up the heat and we attacked the right flank Tom Waters making a lovely break through into their twenty two but got tackled a few yards out. Mikey Williams's turn next, again down the right flank. Try time !!!!! Horn was blasting and we were jumping around in the stand, when an Aberaeron supporter suggested to me that my horn may sound better on the other side of the pitch!!! I apologised and told him it was a early Xmas present and we sat back down to watch Jameson slot over the kick. With the heat still on we attacked again and with some lovely carries by the forwards we were 15 yards out. Adam Davies (New signing and my daughters boyfriend ), scrum half dived into the ruck to dig out the ball, some lovely passing out to Will on the left wing and with Mikey on his shoulder went over for another try. Horn was put into good use again!!! Jameson again slotting over the conversion. We were now fourteen - three up, but Aberaeron were not lying down and came back us again and with a concerted effort on our line went over for a try which was also converted and it wasn't long before they had another. With half time fast approaching we needed to get back in the game and after a number of attacks on their line we were awarded a penalty in front of their posts, which Jameson slotted over. We were back in the lead going into the break. Time for a piece of Tomos Rees's birthday cake.
Second half started and we were now playing into the wind and I had taken the advice of the Aberaeron fans to try my horn out on the other side of the pitch (they were obviously not enjoying it as much as I was). With both teams still challenging hard the game could go either way and that's what happened. Mikey going over again after crashing through some tackles. Unfortunately Jameson just failed to get the conversion (but still retains his saint status). We had worked hard to get those points and to be back to being seven points clear. Both teams were feeling the pain and it was telling, with yellow cards being handed out like Irvin Price hands out parking tickets!!! Aberaeron came at us again and scored another converted try. What would we have to do to win this game?!!!😜 Few changes were made Tom Waters coming off for brother Richie and Tom Walters going on for Ben Lloyd (Respect).
This is nail biting stuff. Time for Will Evans to get in on the action and again with quick hands the ball was fed out to the left wing, where Will went over for a lovely try. This time Jameson from a similar position to where he missed, slotted it over. We just had to hang on to this lead and it was looking good as Mikey kicked the ball up field and we had a line out in their twenty two. Unfortunately we were penalised. They took a quick tap and passed it out to their centre who booted it down field and gave chase. The ball was heading for our line and it was a race between Will and their centre. They were going full out as the ball had crossed the line. It wasn't to be our day as Aberaeron went over again for a converted try, bringing the score to 29 a piece. Three minutes later it was all over. We were so close, but not a bad result, the boys did us proud.
Perhaps if we manage to get to the Millennium stadium in the cup we may meet them again. Thanks to our team, our coaching staff, Louise our Physio, Julie for the stats, Sylvia for giving birth to Mikey, our fans for traveling up in the bad weather, our sponsors, my daughter for fixing my phone and Tomos Rees for his birthday cake. Twiggy will add some photos later. Thanks Twig. Also I'd like to say a big get well soon to Committee man Alun Jenkins.
