Neyland 14 Laugharne 46

Saturday was a day of mixed emotions for us, as I attended the funeral of Doctor Gareth Williams, who was a good friend and supporter of LRFC. Unfortunately I missed the game as I attended the fairly hefty wake. But Fortunately for me our stats team (Julie and Sylvia) were out in force and thanks for modern technology (pen, paper and report delivered to the pub ), they were able to give me a blow by blow account of the game.

So here we go, forgive me if there may be a bit of bias towards Carl Smith and Mikey Williams, but you have to remember their mothers have been responsible for this report.

The game was played in fair conditions but with a strong cold wind, blowing across the pitch. Laugharne settled into the game quickly with Mikey going over for a great try, just two minutes into the game. Jameson duly converted. This was to be Laugharne's half, both defensively and in attack. But it came at a price as my Mikey got a bloody nose (makes a change from Tomos Rees). Our pack as always were performing well and Neylands advances to our line were stopped by some great tackles. Owain putting in his fair share, preventing a try, sending the Neyland player flying into touch. Antonio Setaro made a nice break through three of the Neyland players (he's beginning to show us a bit of his dads flair). 26 minutes in and it was time for Mikey to score his second try (deadly from five yards and equally from the other end of the pitch). Unfortunately Jameson failed to get the kick, but we were on top of them now. Neyland's number four was trying to wind Tomos Rees up in the line out, but Tom being so calm (Not like his Dad), just got on with the game. We were constantly in their half and Neyland didn't like it Tom Waters getting into a bit of a scuffle (not like Tom!!). It was obvious that the game was getting a bit nigley and the Neyland number four had to leave the field for 10 minutes, much to the delight of Mr Rees (Senior). Time for our pack to turn it up a notch and get awarded a penalty try for their cracking first half performance. There was 5 minutes stoppage as the Referee and one of our supporters had a slight disagreement (so unlike Raymond. He's normally such a quiet chap). Neyland were not giving up but they were not going anywhere with Rhodri Rees and Dylan Gibby putting in some big hits and Carl Smith putting in a thumping tackle which was heard by the monks on Caldey Island!!! Our defence was awesome and we finished the half nineteen nil up.

The second half started and with Spiers taking on the full back position it was down to Will Evans to shine again on the wing, scoring a nice try four minutes into the second half but that quickly cancelled out when Neyland went over for a try six minutes later. They were not giving up and kicked the conversion to boot (is that an oxymoron?). Will not to pleased with that, decided to score another, Jameson unfortunately due to the wind couldn't convert that one either. Five minutes later Neyland scored again and managed the conversion. With both teams scoring tries and Neyland on the offensive we had to dig deep and put in a good defensive effort and take every opportunity to sneak a try. Twenty eight minutes and Boom!!! Young Jack Flanagan goes over for a try and Jameson slots it over. That was to be final score of the second half. With Neyland having another player sin binned, some good defensive work by our boys and Gav John coming on for Rhodri Rees in the 36th minute we were home and dry. Neyland scoring 14 points and Laugharne thirty six. Well done boys!!!
Thanks to the stats Team, Julie and Sylvia. Thanks to Kelly for the cracking photos. Thanks to Gary the Coach, Louise our Physio for looking after Mikey's nose. Thanks to the sponsors and all our supporters. Finally thanks to my mate Rob who told me to put a fiver on South Africa to win the World Cup.
