St Clears Away

Doctor Martin Luther King once started a speech with the words "I have dream". Well I also have a dream that I hope comes true and that is these boys of ours stay together for the whole of their rugby careers, as they are awesome together!!!! I'm more excited about this season than I am about the World Cup in Japan!!!

Anyway back to yesterday's game against a fairly good St Clears side. We hadn't made many changes to our starting fifteen from last weeks game, except Owes was back from Ireland so he went to fullback, Adam Davies started as scrum half instead of Jack Flanagan and Gareth Spiers was on the wing instead of Tomos Davies. All these players were to have a big impact on the game.
As last week, the first ten to fifteen minutes of the game we were making it hard for ourselves, loosing our line outs and giving away penalties, one given away by Mikey Williams whilst defending our line successfully, but for what the referee deemed to be a deliberate knock on (spot on ref). So St Clears were six points up in first quarter having slotted over both penalties. With Mikey off for the penalty (13 minutes?!!!), things were not looking to good, but our pack, As always dug deep and with one man down were still too strong for the St Clears pack and we continued to shove them around the field. We were beginning to get some good ball that our backs were able to use and with slick passing saw Spiers go over in the corner for a cracking try (he must have had his dancing shoes on because he was on fire!!!). We were beginning to get comfortable and were on their line pressing them all the time, with backs and forwards flying in at all angles they couldn't control the pressure and gave a penalty, which was taken super quickly by Adam Davies (my daughter's boyfriend) to go over for another try. St Clears came back and had another penalty over, but we were now in control and with Mikey back on we were back to full strength, which meant that another try was calling and Spiers (this time with a bit of juggling) went over again. This time taking the ball closer in to allow Steff Davies to slot over the conversion. This saw us with a half time lead of 17 points to 9. It gave great joy to the thousands of Laugharne supporters who had traveled over the bridge to St Clears to see their team play.

Second half started and we could see that this game was for the taking, with the slight breeze now behind us, the sun in their eyes, and our supporters becoming even more vocal. Game on. First to score was Adam Davies (did I mention he is my daughter's boyfriend), with a nice try which was converted by Steff giving us a nice lead which we could build on. Time for some changes me thinks says Our Coach Gary and brings on Tom Walters, Richie Waters, Dai Thomas and Jack Flanagan. Some how, we were playing a defensive game. A lot of our rugby was being played in our half as St Clears had made a resurgence and were not going to simply give up. They kept attacking our right flank which took some fine tackles from our boys to stop them getting over our line, they then decided to sling it out to the backs and attack our left flank, only for a little Irish leprechaun (Owz, fresh back from his trip) to chance on a mistake and run the whole length of the field to score under the posts which allowed Steff to slot over another conversion. But Steff was suffering a bit having put in some big hits in defence and attack. Fortunately Lou (our previous physio ❤️) who had been watching the game was able to come on and give him some treatment, which allowed him to carry on. Again St Clears attacked our right flank and be Jesus, did we not have the luck of the Irish again, with young Jack Flanagan taking the ball down the right wing to score another amazing try, which Steff again converted. Steff finally succumbed to his injury and through concerns by Lou, came off. There were no more scores and the final result was Laugharne 38 points St Clears 9 points. Giving us a nice well deserved bonus point.

It was a lovely day and St Clears were great hosts and ex Laugharne player, Santa (I was his mentor), was one of the first people to congratulate us on our win. Some great photos from Twiggy, Georgina and Kelly (lots of Carl Smith because she loves him and he has nice plums as well . Also he had another fine game yesterday after shining against Aberaeron last week). Many thanks to Julie for the stats and looking after Carl's plums when he was little. Be safe to say they are in good hands now!!! Many thanks to Louise for stepping in as physio. Thanks to the fans for supporting the boys so well. Thanks to Rob Thomas for the French kiss after he threw up on the grist, having celebrated a little to much in St Clears (Nice teeth but not with bits in them!!!) Finally thanks to a squad of boys that have made me smile from ear to ear and hopefully from year to year for a long time to come.
