St Clears V Laugharne 1/4/23

Laugharne travelled to our near neighbours St Clears in what was expected to be a keenly and even contest, which in reality turned out to be exactly that. The large crowd were fully entertained in this enthralling contest.

St Clears playing with with a stiff breeze behind them had much of the early territory, but Laugharne had the upper hand in the scrums disrupting St Clears possession and gaining a number of penalties. It was Laugharne who opened the scoring with a well taken penalty by James Stephenson. St Clears however were soon back on the attack and from a line out catch and drive they smuggled the ball on the narrow side and with some smart inter passing scored an unconverted try in the corner. St Clears scored a second unconverted try again from a line out and with a concerted catch and drive easily powered over the line. Halftime, St Clears 10 Laugharne 3.

Now with the wind behind them Laugharne were asserting pressure in the StClears half and reduced the lead with a second James Stephenson penalty. The Laugharne forwards were making inroads with powerful carries but the StClears defence remained resolute. StClears were reduced to 14 following a yellow card for killing the ball with further yellows to both scrum haves after a bout of scuffling. Laugharne continued to exert pressure and following a series of scrummaging infringements Laugharne took the lead when they were awarded a penalty try. With the clock ticking down Laugharne maintained the pressure but failed to add to the score when James missed a long range penalty. However StClears were to have the final say when the broke out of their own half and in what was the final play of the game scored a try wide out to win the match. A disappointing end after such an immense effort by the whole team.
