Laugharne v Haverfordwest. 26.4.23

Well after their success at the Principality Stadium in Tuesday night’s Regional finals , representing West Wales, our Captain Tomos Rees and Prop Dorian Harris put on their Laugharne shirts for Wednesday night’s game against Haverfordwest. We had played them the Wednesday before, under lights at Haverfordwest and we fortunately beat them. But they had been hurt and would come back fighting!!!!
The game was supposed to start at 630pm but we didn’t get under way until 655pm. However it was a lovely sunny evening at our home ground at Wooford Park, so there wasn’t going to be a problem with the light. There was a slight breeze blowing down the pitch away from the school, which would be with us for the first half.
Unfortunately it was Haverfordwest that got the first score with a try but no conversion, twelve minutes in.
It was proving to be a tough encounter with Haverfordwest looking for revenge. Fortunately for us James Stevenson was back from injury and put over two penalties to bring the score back to 6-5. But Haverfordwest managed a penalty kick of their own and at half time it was Haverfordwest that we’re leading with the score 6-8.
From the restart we were having to up our game and get over the try line, we had been close on a number of occasions, but finally, from a line out inside their twenty two Carl Smith managed to fight his way over to score in the left hand corner. James converted for an extra two.
Score 13-8.
This was to be short lived as Haverfordwest came back five minutes later, with an unconverted try , to bring the scores level at thirteen all. Time for James to step up to the mark again and put over another penalty to edge us back into the lead. 16-13.
Haverfordwest were matching us in the set pieces and there was very little difference between the two sides.
About twenty minutes had passed and we needed another score. Who could produce the goods? it was to be the Captain, Tomos Rees, who has played brilliant all season (for us and the West Wales Region). He would be the man to do it!!!! Again from a line out inside their twenty two the ball was thrown in to Rhodri, bringing it down to feed Carl in the line who gave it to Tom, who had peeled round from the front and then attacked their defence at pace, crashing over for a lovely try. 😘👍 No conversion? Score 21-13.
This was more like it and nine minutes later we get another!! Again attacking down the left hand side. This time it was James that would go over. After a scrum on their twenty two and several phases of play, the ball was eventually fed left from a ruck to Jameson who slipped a lovely little pass to James who went over in the corner. No conversion?
Four minutes later it was all over and a nice win for us 26-13.
Thanks to Haverfordwest for a great game.
Thanks to our team, Coaches, Physio, Kelly and me for the photos and video, Julie for the stats (not sure about the scores?!!!!!), Billy for the score boards, our sponsors, members and our supporters.
